The second year focus is on finding your own specialist way of working and you’ll be encouraged and supported to start working more independently. During this year you may also have the opportunity to complete an industry work placement or even study abroad.
Beyond Photography – Today media no longer simply interact, they converge into hybrid forms that reflect the complex inter-relations between political, social, and cultural aspects of the present day. This unit will allow you experiment with alternative forms of image-making that push the traditional limits of photography. As a contemporary photographer it is important that you can step back and see the wider frame within which photography now exists, Beyond Photography provides you with the cross-disciplinary skills that makes this possible.
Exposure: The Festival – the work that you produce for Beyond Photography will be exhibited as part of the Medway Photography Festival. Working as part of a small team you will be involved in the conception, preparation and management of an individual group show. This unit will enable you to work more outwardly whilst also expanding your experience and ability working as a part of a team with elements like marketing and concept creation and realisation.
Storytelling –”So what are photographs good at? While they can’t tell stories, they are brilliant at suggesting stories” – Alec Soth
One of the most exciting aspects of contemporary photography is its use as narrative impetus. In this unit narrative conventions will be explored through a series of contextual lectures and technical workshops that will help you critique and analyse the way that storytelling has been utilised throughout the history of art, culture, media and photography. It is this critical interrogation that will enable you to reflect and engage with narrative construction in your own work.
Photographic Futures – Consolidationg your learning from the second year, this unit is designed to your inform understanding of your practice in relation to audiences, publication and dissemination of photographic work. Focusing attention on where your practice is heading rather than on your visual language, this unit encourages reflection on where photography takes place and where you will want to work within photography or the creative industries.
Study Abroad option – this optional unit is designed to broaden your educational experience and to deepen your understanding of cultural diversity and educational styles. It will enable you to study within a different cultural context and gain fresh perspectives.
